Our Fight against the Marvin Nichols Reservoir

The following facts are just a few reasons why we oppose the building of the Marvin Nichols Reservoir:

1.)        Dallas/Fort Worth area is currently bottling water and selling it.  Even people in East Texas buy this water.  Do they need more water so they can sell us more?  If they need so much more water, why are they selling it outside of Dallas/Fort Worth area?

2.)        Corp. of Engineers and EPA state that the mitigated area should be as close to the impacted area as possible.

3.)        Independent study by Texas Forest Service shows a minimum of $87 million to a maximum of $275 million dollars per year of economic loss to N.E. Texas if Marvin Nichols is built.  This loss would be to the timber industry alone.  It does not include farming, ranching, hunting leases, etc.

4.)        County property tax collections will decline in areas where land is taken.

5.)        Dallas area has the highest personal water usage in the state.  They refuse to accept productive conservation measures.

6.)        Alternatives for Dallas water:

1.       Better conservation practices

2.       Lake Texoma

3.       Toledo Bend 2,000,000 acre feet of water currently for sale.  This is 4 times the amount Marvin Nichols could supply.

4.       Raise level of Wright Patman Lake to supply more water.
